In addition to the portrait, I write the story of each individual dog gathering details from my client about personality and character traits. I then hand-print the story on the mat surrounding the portrait.Vicki Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11933382805552065347noreply@blogger.comBlogger252125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5543958463183850387.post-78039647796579058892015-05-11T13:25:00.001-05:002015-05-11T13:25:09.813-05:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am honored to have been selected for the Mississippi Arts Commission Individual Artists Mini-Grant which is a competitive grant selection based on "artist excellence". My new work consists of necklaces, bracelets, and key tyes made of natural fibers (recycled silk, linen, banana & mulberry fibers), sterling silver and handmade beads. These grants are funded in part by the Mississippi Legisature and the National Endowment for the Arts.<br />

this is lilah and she is the youngest of my small herd. she was black
when born and is slowly turning gray and will grow into almost white
with darker main, tail and stockings. not sure why but i have always
seen her as blue and lilac....hence her name... lilah blue. this
painting seems to be a dance between water and color. sometimes there is
just no controlling things... I did leave plenty white border so it can be trimmed and fit in a ready-made standard size frame.</div>

this is izzy (another of my adopted critters) being her sweet self in a
very serene moment. she looks a little sad and alone but rest assured
she has lots of playmates! I first painted this in watercolor as an
under-painting then went over those colors in gouache. I do like the way
the paint and colors seem to melt together through the layers.</div>

this is Sam and he is generally very laid back but on this day he was in a rather wild mood. the wind was blowing and it was a cool crisp day. he was a handful but ended up very pleasant. this watercolor looks brighter online than in person due to the back-lighting of the screen. Anyway, i photographed it until i could get as close as I could to the real colors. thanks for looking at my work. if you wish to purchase just click on the the daily paintworks icon at the right.</div>

these guys hang out on about 20 acres with grass, hills, woods, pasture, and best of all a creek. they wander around all day and most times i can't even see them. but when its time to eat they will be up by the house watching and waiting for a door to open or a dog to bark. this means that its time to eat. it is wonderous how they seem to always to know what time it is.<br />
<br />
this is gouache (opaque watercolor) which is fairly new to me. when i try something new, i like familiar subjects or a photo that i have previously painted. this allows me to experiment with the new paints and not worry about anything else. back to watercolors! this lovely creature belongs to a friend of my son's. there is something unexplainable about him that makes it easy for me to paint. i have recently spent a little time experimenting more with acrylics but i always venture back to watercolors. i do find that the experiments in opaque mediums helps with my watercolors. if you have an interest in purchasing please visit www.dailypaintworks.com... you can simply click on the icon at the right!</div>

i think these paintings probably look easier
than they are. i guess the trick is to make them look easy when they are actually a bit difficult. controlling the flow of color and water is a
constant challenge. I know I have painted this horse a million times but
there is something about the lines and movement and fineness of a
thoroughbred that just personifies grace. here she is running directly toward me.</div>

my second attempt and I am thinking I will try yet again. i am not quite getting what I want. this is a really dark almost black horse and i find white or light animals much easier to color. this paper is a soft or cold press which is not the rougher texture that i prefer. i know when i paint these really loose paintings that there is a thin line between what i want and just a watery mess. these are however really fun to create!</div>

I tried this painting a few weeks ago in gouache (see below). i was not happy with the results so I tried again with just the watercolor. much happier with this result. i do love color and it is hard to beat gouache for that deep rich color but i haven't yet mastered it yet.</div>

This painting is for Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society's annual fundraising art auction, Paws for Art. I donate a piece each year and have done so for many years now. The cat, Dammit Kitty, is a walk-up cat (dropped off as a kitten on the road by my house) and the pup, Boo Radley, is a recent acquisition to my farm from OLHS. Boo was one of a litter of many newborns dropped of at OLHS (with no mom). Fortunately, someone (an angel no doubt) took on the entire litter and kept them until they were 5 weeks old at which time OLHS put them up for adoption. There are so many and so willing few homes!Vicki Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11933382805552065347noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5543958463183850387.post-30375829578472534702013-10-13T17:02:00.001-05:002013-10-13T17:02:23.793-05:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

CrackerJack is almost 30 years old. I have had him since he was about 8. He is a bit hard to paint because he always looks grumpy these days. But, here the wind was blowing and he was focused on something in the distance. This painting was actually an experiment (and still is) of painting watercolor on primed board. I will let it to dry and then figure out a way to seal it. I am hoping to have a painting that will not have to be placed behind glass.<br />

Billy is part lab and part pit. A LabraPit or a PitAdor depending on the day or situation he finds himself in. Here he decided to round up Lilah then he had absolutely no idea what to do with her. He's looking to me for advice.Vicki Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11933382805552065347noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5543958463183850387.post-75938096017863578602013-04-16T11:37:00.001-05:002013-04-16T17:51:29.376-05:00red flowers<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
