Christmas Eve

This is for an upcoming show. It is again my horses enjoying their abundant haystack during a snow. It was indeed Christmas Eve of last year and they were kept warm by munching hay aplenty!

Black Lab Watercolor Portrait

"Gator"
14 x 14
watercolor
400lb arches

I used to do a lot of realistic pet portraits when I had more time. This is one that was recently commissioned. I will also be writing a story about Gator which I will print on the mat surrounding the portrait. Don't have time to do many of these anymore. And, doing this one reminded me that there is nothing harder to paint than a black dog.... except maybe a black cat.

oh, it's you again

thought i'd try watercolor sticks! they arrived yesterday. i was just walking out to feed the forever-hungry herd when the UPS truck drove up. the gang started their usual feed-time chattering (i swear they wear watches) and when the UPS truck pulled in, they were quite certain that the big brown truck was delivering mass quantities of their favorite feed. when the driver stepped off and was moving around the truck they got quite rowdy! anyway, much to their disappointment it was only art supplies. you would think they would be used to that by now.

what rain?

i recently took this photo. in going through the ones of Lilah, i noticed a common thread. this little girl is all about her tail (see painting below where she is on the far end). when searching the bank of photos that i now have, the shadow in this one caught my eye. in this painting i experimented with more colors with the intent to paint this image on a larger format maybe for an upcoming show. i know that the more i venture away from "normal" colors the harder it is to make sense of the subject.  the color use tends to make the image go flat and the shadows don't define it so much.
